Apple News is seeking to be the go-to source for covering the forthcoming 2024 US presidential election by improving its app with a number of new features.
Most importantly, the news app now supports Live Activities on iPhones running iOS 16. Live Activities enable Apple News to display continuously updated content immediately on the lock screen or in the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro models. According to Apple Insider, during the recent Republican Iowa caucuses (Jan. 15), the app’s editors used Live Activities to display real-time delegate total percentages as the results came in. Users can now opt in to receive election-related alerts by following specific stories.
The world’s most popular news app has had a dedicated Election 2024 feature for quite some time, but additional customizing options have been introduced. Readers can now select their preferred news sources, subjects, candidates, and even region-specific content, which will populate the “For You” section with relevant stories.
Apple News+ subscribers and Apple One Premier members can access audio versions of articles in the app if they wish to listen to election coverage. There’s also a daily podcast that recaps top items in ten minutes, as well as Apple News Narrated, which is a dedicated feed of chosen articles read out loud.
With months to go, new election-related features may continue to be added to the app. But for now, adopting the current iOS 16 update and perusing Apple News’ special election area looks to be a solid starting point to track caucus events.
Bonus: Apple News+ Audio
If you’re seeking for more general news coverage, we’d like to remind readers of a valuable resource we’ve used since its inception: Audio and podcasts. The daily “Apple News Today” feature summarizes the day’s major stories in a 10-minute format.
AppleNews+ subscribers and Apple One Premier members get access to audio versions of articles. on addition, many of these stories are available alongside “Apple News Today” on the Apple Podcasts app, making listening and queue management easier.
Whatever your political affiliation, the Apple News app aims to be your one-stop shop for political news. Live Activity integration makes this much more intriguing, therefore we urge that everyone give it a shot.
Other News Apps
The news app business is competitive, and Apple will face competition from several other companies vying for a larger share of election traffic.
Google News, Flipboard, SmartNews, Feedly, and Pulse Reader are some of the most popular alternatives to AppleNews among iOS users.
Google News provides personalized news with cross-platform availability, Flipboard has a magazine-style interface for custom feeds, SmartNews employs AI for intelligent curation, Feedly focuses on RSS feeds rather than general news sources, and Pulse Reader is known for its readability and topic customization. While no competition approaches Apple News’ iOS integration, each offers something for those looking for alternatives to news aggregation.
