Summary:
- Depp’s renowned role, Captain Jack Sparrow, was removed from the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ series.
- The superstar was booted from the franchise due to his public divorce and court struggle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
- There have been various reports about the actor returning to the franchise, but nothing has materialised so yet.
Take this with a grain of salt because it comes from one of the supposed “scoopers,” Daniel Richtman , but it’s a rumor worth following up on.
Captain Jack Sparrow may not be back in action! According to speculations, the superstar has been eliminated from the sixth movie of the renowned ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise. The entertainment conglomerate is contemplating actress Ayo Edebiri as a substitute for Depp.
According to reports, The Bear and Bottoms star Ayo Edibiri is in talks to play the protagonist in one of Disney‘s two upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean films. The other, which stars Margot Robbie, is not as far along but features a script by Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey.
According to CBR, the decision is motivated by Disney’s desire to develop a Pirates of the Caribbean film with a female lead.
The sixth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was announced in 2011. However, it has been postponed multiple times, particularly since Johnny Depp’s departure as the male lead in 2020, following his legal fights with former wife Amber Heard over the last few years, according to CBR.
The media source went on to say that in 2018, Disney attempted to make the sequel with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, but it did not work out.
Later, in 2020, Barbie star Margot Robbie’s name was tossed around to lead the Pirates spin-off (script to be written by Christina Hodson, according to Comic Book Movie), but to no effect, as reported by Variety.
According to the news outlet, Daniel Richtman has stated that the next Pirates sequel would feature a female protagonist, and Ayo Edebiri’s name has been floated as a possibility.
Craig Mazin, the writer of Chernobyl, and Ted Elliot, the series writer, are collaborating on another Pirates of the Caribbean film starring Edibiri . Neither picture would have any link to the original films, which starred Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, though one may pave the way for his return. It has also been stated that The Bear star will play real-life Irish pirate Anne Bonny, who was white, as opposed to Edebiri, who is black and has roots in Barbados and Nigeria.
A Casting Blunder?
Some fans thought Bonny was a pale-skinned, red-haired Irish woman, and casting Edebiri, who is of Nigerian descent, was a casting error. Some criticised Disney for “blackwashing” (casting black individuals in historical characters who are Caucasian).
Edibiri was just cast in Marvel’s Thunderbolts but had to withdraw out owing to schedule difficulties. She was replaced by Geraldine Viswanathan.
Disney has yet to confirm a release date for either Pirates of the Caribbean film, but with Bob Iger clearly seeking more sequels and franchises, this is likely to change.
According to CBR, the next Pirates sequels will be about youthful pirates searching for a buried treasure, and it’s unclear whether the original cast of Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, and Tom Hollander, among others, will return.
Meanwhile, Ayo Edebiri, a Primetime Emmy winner, is best known for his award-winning role as chef Sydney Adamu in the Hulu/FX series The Bear, but he has also acted in comic dramas such as Theater Camp and Bottoms. She also voiced characters in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Jack Sparrow fans are heartbroken.
The announcement didn’t go over well with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ enthusiasts.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk retweeted the post and said, “Disney sucks.”
