Selena and Henrie Come together For ‘Wizards Of Waverly Place’ Sequel Pilot.
Wizards of Waverly Place, one of Disney’s iconic sitcoms, is receiving a sequel. Disney Branded Television has ordered a pilot for the follow-up, which will be executive produced by original actors Selena Gomez and David Henrie. Gomez will guest feature in the Disney Channel pilot as the character who helped launch her career, Alex Russo, with David Henrie playing the role of Justin Russo as a series regular. He is accompanied by newcomers Janice LeAnn Brown (Disney’s Just Roll with It), Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat), and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess).
For those unfamiliar with Wizards legend, the original series featured the Russo siblings Alex (Gomez), Justin (Henrie), and Max (Jake T. Austin) as their father (DeLuise) trained them magic in preparation for the day when they’d have to compete against one another to become the “family wizard.” At the end of the series—spoiler alert!—Alex won the competition, but Justin was chosen headmaster of the magic school “WizTech” and kept his magic as well. (Max, meantime, was named heir to the family’s sandwich restaurant.)
The revival pilot is written and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, who also created Raven’s Home, a Disney Channel comedy spinoff. It begins up after a mystery incident at WizTech, where an adult Justin Russo has left his wizard skills behind to live a normal, human life with his wife and two sons. A powerful young magician seeking training unexpectedly arrives at his door. Justin must embrace his past to protect the Wizard World’s future.
Billie, the powerful young magician whom Justin takes under his wing, will be played by series star Brown. Thiele will play Justin’s oldest kid, Roman Russo, while Gianopulos will portray Justin’s wife, Giada.
In addition to Gomez, Henrie, Elinoff, and Thomas, Gary Marsh (Disney’s Descendants: The Rise of Red) and Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) will executive produce, with Fickman directing.
Marsh was a former longstanding top Disney Channels creative executive who was the driving force behind Wizards of Waverly Place and helped get Gomez on the network after she was spotted at an open casting call in Dallas.
Todd J. Greenwald created the original series, which ran from 2007 to 2012, and chronicled the Russo family, three siblings who navigated adolescence while developing their magical skills. Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, and David DeLuise were also in the cast, and all of them (except Henrie) reunited for the 2013 television special The Wizards Return: Alex Vs. Alex.
The pilot order brings an end to years of speculation regarding a Wizards of Waverly Place resurrection or relaunch. It also aligns with Disney Branded Television’s objective of expanding Disney Channel’s range of multi-camera sitcoms.
Gomez is presently a executive producer on the popular Hulu/20th TV comedy series Only Murders In the Building. She is represented by Lighthouse Management + Media, WME, and JSSK. Henrie is represented by Untitled. Brown is represented by Eris Talent Agency and MB Talent and Entertainment Management. Thiele is represented by DDO Artists Agency. Gianopulos is represented by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
As with many pilots, it is possible that it will not be developed into a full series; however, if it does, we can anticipate it to air on Disney Channel and Disney+.
While we wait for the new series, you can watch the original and two movies on Disney+ right now.
